Seachem Reef Zooplankton is a concentrated blend of marine zooplankton designed to provide the essential fatty acids, proteins, vitamins, amino acids, with biological carotenoids for coral growth. The particle size range is 12.5-500 μm to feed a broad range of marine aquarium inhabitants. Reef Zooplankton contains a natural source of carotenoids which provides essential proteins as well as a more bioavailable source of pigmentation when compared to other natural sources and synthetic pigments. Carotenoids provide the extra benefit of antioxidant activity. In addition, Reef Zooplankton is enhanced to increase the bioavailability of important nutrients such as proteins, lipids, B vitamins, and other organic pigments, thus, corals expend less energy to derive the nutritional benefit. It is blended to contain proper ratio of fatty acids, carbohydrates, and proteins.

Directions: Shake well before using. Add 1 capful (5 mL) per 200 L (50 US gallons) of water twice weekly or as required to maintain coral growth. For best results, dose directly to aquarium; target feeding can overwhelm corals and have a negative impact. Refrigeration after opening is recommended, but not required.

Replenishment of a number of trace elements is required to maintain an environment ideal for the growth and reproduction of marine life, but while the importance of trace elements has been recognized by aquarists for many years, the physiological reasons are not fully understood. The chemical elements in seawater are varied, and, likewise their addition to the aquarium in trace quantities has varied effects on a variety of saltwater plant and invertebrate species. In general, though, these elements are important for metabolic processes and pigment formation. Addition of iron, for instance, has been shown to benefit coloring and growth for corals, anenomes, and other photosynthetic animals.

Seachem Reef Trace supplies a broad range of trace elements demonstrated to be necessary for proper reef health and growth. Trace elements are normally depleted by utilization, oxidation and precipitation. The latter two processes occur more rapidly than with other micronutrients. This makes it important to restore trace elements on a regular basis. Reef Trace may be used alone or in conjunction with Reef Plus. Best results are obtained when both are used. Reef Trace is nitrate/phosphate free.

Directions: Use 1 capful (5 mL) for every 80 L (20 US gallons) twice a week. When using in conjunction with Reef Plus, dose on alternate days.

Seachem Reef Strontium (250mL)

Strontium occurs in natural seawater at a concentration of about 8 to 10 mg/L. It is chemically very similar to calcium, and many organisms incorporate it in their skeletons along with calcium. Its addition to reef aquariums aids the growth of corals, coralline algae and other organisms that lay down a calcereous skeleton or shell, including tridacnid clams.

Seachem Reef Strontium is intended to restore and maintain strontium to levels found in natural seawater without affecting pH. Strontium is utilized in the same manner as calcium and holds a similar importance in maintaining a vigorous level of growth.

Seachem Reef Strontium contains 10,000 mg/L of available strontium as a gluconate complex. Gluconate complexation confers several benefits: it increases the bioavailability of the strontium, it provides a rich source of metabolic energy to help maintain peak coral growth, and it inhibits strontium precipitation/alkalinity depletion. Gluconate contains no nitrogen or phosphorous, thus it is biologically impossible for it to lead to algae growth in a properly maintained reef system.

Directions:
Beginner: Use 1 capful (5 mL) per 80 L (20 US gallons) twice a week.

Advanced: Check strontium level (use Reef Status Strontium to test strontium levels), then follow addition regimen above until strontium is adjusted to 8–12 mg/L. Each 5 mL/80 L will raise strontium by about 0.6 mg/L. Quantity or frequency can be adjusted as required to maintain strontium.

Expert: After determining the strontium consumption rate, set up a continuous drip system. Use the following formula (or skip the math and use our Dosage Calculator) to determine how much to add to your top-off water: m=0.1vs (m=mL of product to add to top off water, v=volume of tank in liters, s=amount to raise strontium in mg/L). For example, if you want to raise strontium by 2 mg/L in a 200 liter tank, then you would add 0.1x200x2=40 mL into the top-off water. [For reference: 1 gallon=3.8 L].

Seachem Reef Plus is a full spectrum reef supplement containing trace elements, vitamins, and amino acids demonstrated to have a positive impact on the growth of corals and other desirable reef creatures. Reef Plus is formulated to provide nutrients available from natural tropical reef waters. Contains vitamin B12, vitamin C, thiamine, inositol, choline, iodide, and other essential constituents. Reef Plus is nitrate/phosphate free.

Other manufacturers’ vitamin supplements are incomplete, containing only vitamins and trace minerals. Reef Plus contains necessary amino acids in addition to a full complement of trace minerals and high amounts of vitamin C and B complex vitamins. It is so concentrated that it can be effectively used as a food soak for frozen fish foods.

Replenishment of a number of trace elements is required to maintain an environment ideal for the growth and reproduction of marine life, but while the importance of trace elements has been recognized by aquarists for many years, the physiological reasons are not fully understood. The chemical elements in seawater are varied, and, likewise their addition to the aquarium in trace quantities has varied effects on a variety of saltwater plant and invertebrate species. In general, though, these elements are important for metabolic processes and pigment formation. Addition of iron, for instance, has been shown to benefit coloring and growth for corals, anemones, and other photosynthetic animals.

Directions: Use 1 capful (5 mL) for each 80 L (20 US gallons) twice a week or as required to maintain coral growth. May also be used in food by mixing 1 mL in about 15 mL (1 tablespoon) of food. Refrigerate after opening.

Seachem Reef Phytoplankton is a concentrated blend of green and brown marine phytoplankton designed to provide the essential fatty acids, proteins, vitamins, amino acids, with biological carotenoids for invertebrate diet. Size ranges from 1-20 μm to feed a broad range of tropical marine aquarium filter feeders and invertebrates. Reef Phytoplankton contains a natural source of carotenoids which provides essential proteins as well as a more bioavailable source of pigmentation when compared to other natural sources and synthetic pigments. Carotenoids provide the extra benefit of antioxidant activity.

In addition, Reef Phytoplankton is enhanced to increase the bioavailability of important nutrients such as proteins, lipids, B vitamins, and other organic pigments, thus, corals expend less energy to derive the nutritional benefit. It is blended to contain the proper ratio of fatty acids, carbohydrates, and proteins. Blending phytoplankton yields better nutritional value. Seachem Reef Iodide (250ml)

Iodide is an important element required by invertebrates and many soft corals (gorgonians, sarcophytons, etc). Reef Iodide is a concentrated (8,000 mg/L) stabilized potassium iodide source for reef aquaria that will restore and maintain iodide levels to those found in natural sea water. It is formulated to provide a safe source of iodide that will not convert to toxic free iodine under storage or reef conditions. Iodine is as toxic as chlorine and should never be used in a reef system. However, iodide is as safe as chloride. Most iodine supplements on the market are simply potassium iodide or a medicinal disinfectant commonly known as Lugol’s Solution. Lugol’s is a highly concentrated iodine/iodide solution that is highly toxic and intended for disinfection. Although such products are sold for use in reef aquaria, we believe the risks vastly outweigh the potential minor benefits.

Seachem Reef Iodide is formulated to provide a safe source of iodide that will not convert to toxic free iodine under storage or reef conditions. Potassium iodide only products are a safer alternative but not very effective alone owing to the unstable nature of iodide in the aquarium environment. When added to an aquarium environment, iodide becomes unstable converting to elemental iodine (which is biocidal), iodate (which is useless to corals, toxic at elevated levels, and can't be tested for), and iodide which is the only form of iodine available to corals for uptake. These products' inherent instability makes them potentially dangerous to coral health. Unlike competing products, Reef Iodideis complexed to a stabilizing compound in order to keep it in the iodide form when added to the aquarium. All of the product remains usable and fully bio-available.

Directions:
Beginner: Add 5 mL (1 capful) for each 200 L (US 50 gallons) every other day.

Advanced: Add 1 mL for each 80 L (20 US gallons) daily to raise iodide by 0.10 mg/L. If necessary, adjust amount so that iodide reads 0.06–0.08 mg/L 6–12 hours after the last amount. Thereafter, use this amount daily and check iodide twice a month.

Expert: After determining the iodide consumption rate, set up a continuous drip system. Use the following formula (or skip the math and use our Dosage Calculator) to determine how much to add to your top-off water: m=0.125vi (m=mL of product to add to top off water, v=volume of tank in liters, i=amount to raise iodide in mg/L). For example, if you want to raise iodide by 0.10 mg/L in a 200 liter tank, then you would add 0.125x200x0.10=2.5 mL into the top-off water. [For reference: 1 gallon=3.8 L].

Notes:
It is normal for iodide levels to decline after a few days. This results from utilization and chemical depletion. Therefore, amount and/or frequency of use can be varied. Amount used can be adjusted based on coral response. To check iodide levels use Seachem’s MultiTest Iodine & Iodide test kit.

Seachem Reef Dip contains elemental iodine complexed to a protective slime coat for safely and gently disinfecting corals. It is effective against bacteria, fungus, and protozoans. It may be used prophylactically (without evidence of disease) or to remedy diseased specimens. It is safe to use with both stony and soft corals. It is also safe for anemones and polyps. Reef Dip provides a protective slime coat complex that covers the coral, holding the iodine in contact with the infected site for extended periods of time. In addition, the slime coat prevents infection from re-rentering the site.

Directions: Do not use in the aquarium. Use in a separate container. Remove 4 L (1 US gallon) of water from the source aquarium to a container suitable for dipping. Add 5–10 mL (1–2 capfuls) of Reef Dip and mix. Place coral specimen in dip for 15–30 minutes, depending on severity of problem. In very severe cases, a double dose may be used. With clear and accessible lesions, dip concentrate may be painted on lesions directly before placing in dip. Observe animals during treatment for evidence of adverse reactions such as excessive sliming.

Seachem Reef Complete is a concentrated (160,000 mg/L) optimized blend of ionic calcium designed to restore and maintain calcium to levels found in natural seawater without affecting pH. Calcium and carbonates are essential to all coral growth. If either becomes deficient, coral growth will cease, followed by a rapid decline in coral health. To prevent this you must provide calcium (Reef Complete) and carbonates (Reef Builder or Reef Carbonate).

Reef Complete also includes magnesium and strontium in amounts proportionate to typical utilization ratios (100:5:0.1, Ca:Mg:Sr). This allows one to maintain these two important elements while maintaining calcium.

Reef Complete is a blended product. It is not simply calcium chloride. Commercially available calcium chloride contains ammonia. Unlike other ionic calcium supplements, Reef Complete is blended to a higher pH in order to force the ammonia to gas off into the atmosphere. In addition, Reef Complete is more concentrated than any other liquid product on the market. Reef Complete contains 160,000 ppm calcium. Our nearest competitor’s product is only 110,000 ppm calcium.

Directions:
Beginner: Use 1 capful (5 mL) per 80 L (20 US gallons) twice a week. Check calcium every 2 weeks and adjust amount or frequency accordingly.

Advanced: Check calcium level (use Reef Status: Calcium to measure calcium), then follow addition regimen above until calcium is adjusted to 380–420 mg/L. Each 5 mL/80 L (20 US gallons) will raise calcium by about 10 mg/L. Quantity or frequency can be adjusted, but do not exceed 12.5 mL/80 L (20 US gallons) per day. Expert: After determining the calcium consumption rate, set up a continuous drip system. Use the following formula (or skip the math and use our Dosage Calculator) to determine how much to add to your top–off water: m=vc/160 (m=mL of product to add to top off water, v=volume of tank in liters, c=amount to raise calcium in mg/L). [For reference: 1 US gallon=3.8 L].

Notes:

Seachem Reef Carbonate is a concentrated (4,000 meq/L) optimized blend of carbonate and bicarbonate salts designed to restore and maintain alkalinity in the reef aquarium. Calcium and carbonates are essential to all coral growth. If either becomes deficient, coral growth will cease, followed by a rapid decline in coral health. To prevent this you must provide carbonates (Reef Carbonate) and calcium (Reef Advantage Calcium or Reef Complete). Whereas competing products simply use sodium bicarbonate, Reef Carbonate is made with a blend of carbonate and bicarbonate salts. This blend of salts results in Reef Carbonate yielding a pK of roughly 9.0 in saltwater (higher than competing products). In a closed reef system, the multitude of organics produced by reef inhabitants tends to force pH downward, but the advantage of Reef Carbonate’s higher pK is a stabilization of pH around 8.3-8.4. Competing products’ formulations make them incapable of such a claim, so pH will always fall below desirable levels for a reef aquarium. Used as directed, Reef Carbonate will not deplete calcium, magnesium, or strontium which usually tend to precipitate with increasing alkalinity. Reef alkalinity should be maintained at 3–6 meq/L (8–17 dKH). Alkalinity should not be allowed to fall below 2 meq/L.

Directions:
Beginner: Use 1 capful (5 mL) per 80 L (20 US gallons) twice a week. Best if diluted into a cup of freshwater, then added. Check alkalinity every 2 weeks and adjust amount or frequency accordingly.

Advanced: Check alkalinity (use MultiTest Marine pH & Alkalinity to test alkalinity levels), then follow addition regimen above until alkalinity is adjusted to 4–5 meq/L. Each mL contains a minimum of 4 meq of alkalinity. Each 5 mL/80 L will raise alkalinity by about 0.25 meq/L. Amount or frequency can be adjusted, but do not exceed 20 mL/80 L per day. Thereafter, use as required to maintain alkalinity.

Expert: After determining the alkalinity consumption rate, set up a continuous drip system. Use the following formula (or skip the math and use our Dosage Calculator) to determine how much to add to your top–off water: m=va/4 (m=mL of product to add to top off water, v=volume of tank in liters, a=amount to raise alkalinity in meq/L). For example, if you want to raise alkalinity by 1 meq/L in a 200 liter tank, then you would add (200x1)/4=50 mL into the top–off water. [For reference: 1 gallon=3.8 L].

Seachem Reef Calcium is a concentrated (50,000 mg/L) bioavailable polygluconate complexed calcium intended to maintain calcium in the reef aquarium without altering pH. Additionally, polygluconate contains no nitrogen or phosphorous, thus it is biologically impossible for it to lead to algae growth in a properly maintained reef system. Polygluconate complexation confers several benefits: it increases the bioavailability of the calcium, it provides a rich source of metabolic energy to help maintain peak coral growth, and it prevents calcium precipitation/alkalinity depletion. Reef Calcium utilizes a chained organic calcium rather than an ionic calcium. When a coral absorbs a molecule into its tissue, it uses the same amount of energy regardless of molecular size. However, charged molecules require more energy. When an uncharged molecule of Reef Calcium is absorbed, the coral acquires multiple calcium atoms as well as an easily metabolized carbohydrate with less energy expended than it uses for ionic calcium uptake. Therefore, at lower calcium levels, corals can still take in as much calcium through our organic chains as they would at much higher levels of ionic calcium. Reef Calcium may be used alone to maintain calcium but will provide enhanced levels of coral growth when used in conjunction with an ionic calcium supplement (Reef Complete, Reef Advantage Calcium). Reef Calcium is intended to maintain calcium levels; if calcium becomes seriously depleted one should either perform a water change or use an ionic calcium supplement to restore the depleted level of calcium.

When used as directed Seachem Reef Buffer will raise the pH of your reef system to 8.3 without fear of accidentally overshooting the pH to a dangerous level. Whereas competing products simply use sodium bicarbonate, Reef Buffer is made with a blend of carbonate and bicarbonate salts. This blend of salts results in Reef Buffer yielding a pK of roughly 8.6 in saltwater. The pK of a buffering agent is equivalent to the pH around which that buffer most strongly buffers. One would presume, then, that the pK of a saltwater buffer should be 8.3; however, the multitude of organic acids produced by the inhabitants of a reef system forces pH downward to a much greater degree than in a non-reef, marine system. A buffer with a pK of 8.3 would end up yielding a pH more in the range of 8.0-8.2. Reef Buffer's higher pK (8.6) allows for greater pH stability in a reef system where the bioload is significantly more than in a fish only system. Competing products are not designed specifically for the reef environment, so their pK is too low (in most cases, pK 8.3). At this pK, the proper pH can never be reached in saltwater. Reef Buffer will also raise carbonate alkalinity; however, when pH is not an issue, Reef Builder or Reef Carbonate should be your first choice for a carbonate alkalinity supplement.

Directions: Check pH and alkalinity before use (use MultiTest Marine pH & Alkalinity to test ph nd alkalinity levels). Use 5 g (1 level teaspoon) for every 150 L (40 US gallons) to raise pH by about 0.1 pH units (this will also raise alkalinity by about 0.5 meq/L). For precise dosing, use the Seachem Digital Spoon Scale. Dissolve in at least 250 mL (one cup) of freshwater, then add to the tank. The pH of natural sea water is 8.25–8.30. In a well established reef system pH adjustment may be necessary biweekly to semiweekly. Dosing requirements will vary, but do not exceed the recommended dose without checking your pH and alkalinity (alkalinity should not exceed 6 meq/L). If an alkalinity of 6 meq/L has been reached and a pH of at least 8.20 has not been attained or substantial cloudiness that does not clear within 15 minutes is encountered, then the system is not ionically balanced. To restore ionic balance perform a water change or adjust the magnesium and calcium levels to approximately 3:1 Mg:Ca.

DO NOT OVERDOSE: Excess alkalinity may enhance the loss of calcium, magnesium, and strontium. Do not directly mix with any calcium, magnesium, or strontium supplement. Best if calcium & carbonate additives are added on alternate days or at least 30 minutes apart.

Seachem Reef Advantage Calcium is a non-caustic (pH 8.3–8.6) optimized blend of ionic calcium designed to restore and maintain calcium to levels found in natural seawater. Calcium and carbonates are essential to all coral growth. If either becomes deficient, coral growth will cease, followed by a rapid decline in coral health. Reef Advantage Calcium also includes magnesium and strontium in amounts proportionate to typical utilization ratios (100:5:0.1, Ca:Mg:Sr). This allows one to maintain these two important elements while maintaining calcium. Unlike limewater (kalkwasser), Reef Advantage Calcium does not have a caustic pH and will not deplete magnesium. Used as directed, it will not deplete alkalinity.

Directions:
Beginner: Use 5 g (1 level teaspoon) per 150 L (40 US gallons) twice a week. For precise dosing, use the Seachem Digital Spoon Scale. Dissolve in at least 250 mL (1 cup) of freshwater. Check calcium every 2 weeks and adjust amount or frequency accordingly.

Advanced: Check calcium level (use Reef Status Calcium to test magnesium levels), then follow addition regimen above until calcium is adjusted to 380–420 mg/L. Each 5 g/150 L will raise calcium by about 12 mg/L. Quantity or frequency can be adjusted, but do not exceed 10 g/150 L per day. Thereafter, use as required to maintain calcium.

The chemical elements in seawater are varied, and, likewise their addition to the aquarium in trace quantities has varied effects on a variety of saltwater plant and invertebrate species. In general, though, these elements are important for metabolic processes and pigment formation. Addition of iron, for instance, has been shown to benefit coloring and growth for corals, anemones, and other photosynthetic animals.

Seachem Marine Trace supplies a broad range of trace elements demonstrated to be necessary for proper fish health and growth. Seachem Marine Buffer will safely raise marine pH to 8.3. It will not raise pH above 8.3 even if inadvertently overdosed. Marine Buffer is a blended product and is not just sodium bicarbonate or sodium carbonate, commonly sold as a substitute. Such products can raise pH to dangerous levels if not used properly. Marine Buffer contains sodium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, and potassium salts of carbonate, bicarbonate, chloride, sulfate, and borate. Use Seachem’s MultiTest Marine pH & Alkalinity to check pH and total alkalinity. Use Marine Trace to restore the proper level of trace and feed NutriDiet Marine Flakes for thriving, healthy saltwater fish. Total Alkalinity is a measurement of three main ions: carbonate, bicarbonate, and borate. In saltwater, bicarbonate drives the pH toward 7.8, carbonate drives pH toward 9.1, and borate toward 9.5 or more. Because of the chemistry of buffering systems, the closer you get the pH to the pK of a buffering system, the harder it is for the pH to shift. So, if you blend a buffer so that the combined product drives the pH toward 8.3, then the more you use, the more stable the pH becomes. That is the principle behind Marine Buffer. It is a blended buffer that drives and holds your pH at 8.3 because of the blend. The catch to this seemingly simple solution is that most salt mixes contain substantial amounts of bicarbonate salts. This shifts the pK of the buffering system further towards 7.8, and a buffer that shoots for 8.3 will never quite get there. Thus, the pK of Marine Buffer is actually slightly higher than 8.3 in order to combat the influx of bicarbonate at every water change. Marine Buffer was the first buffer on the market which contained borate salts (which make a saltwater buffering system much more stable), and Marine Buffer remains the most effective pH buffer on the market for marine aquaria.

Directions: Add 5 g (1 level teaspoon) for each 80 L (20 US gallons). For precise dosing, use the Seachem Digital Spoon Scale. Dissolve in at least one cup of freshwater. This dose will also raise alkalinity by about 1 meq/L. Add daily until pH stabilizes at 8.3. This will take from a day to a week, depending on original pH and alkalinity. Thereafter, use biweekly or monthly to maintain a pH of 8.3.

If this practice is not adequate, then overstocking, overfeeding, or other poor management practice should be sought as a likely cause. In ionically balanced marine water, Marine Buffer produces little precipitate or cloudiness. If an extensive precipitate forms upon addition of Marine Buffer that does not dissolve within ~15 minutes, then poor ionic balance was present. A water change should be initiated when convenient before further use of the product. Effectiveness improves with continued use. Do not directly mix with any calcium, magnesium, or strontium supplement.

Dymax Denitrator XD-600 is an easy to install, self siphoning, denitrator for internal and external use for reef aquariums up to 600 liters in size. Inside every normal working aquarium fish and uneaten food produce waste which breaks down to form Ammonia. Ammonia in high amounts is highly toxic to most fishes. In nature, the volume of water per fish is extremely high, so waste products become diluted to low concentrations. In aquariums, however, it can take as little as a few hours for ammonia concentrations to reach toxic levels. The Dymax Denitrator XD-600 provides an excellent biological denitrification effect to eliminate the nitrates through the presence of the micro-organism (bacteria), which is currently one of the best fighter against the nitrates. The natural reduction of nitrate to nitrogen gas will only occur if there is an area within your system with a very low oxygen level that will allow anaerobic bacteria to exist in sufficient quantities to handle the waste that is being produced by your tanks inhabitants, such as within live rock or in a deep sand bed. Where this does not exist it is necessary to create such an environment and this is where denitrification reactors like the Dymax Denitrator XD-600 come in to play.
