Common Bird Feeding Questions:

Don’t all birds just eat seeds?

In fact, a seed-only diet is insufficient and most household birds need a little more added to their diet. Bird seed and food is a surprisingly versatile topic and the best way to understand this is to remember that in the wild birds usually have a remarkably diverse and varied diet, and different species have very different requirements. Did you know there are over 10 types of bird diets? Check out our blog post about this here.

Can I feed my pet bird the same as the wild birds in our garden?

Not all companion pet birds have the same dietary needs, nor will our outside wild birds have similar needs to our pet birds. Just as our North American wild birds such as chickadees, woodpeckers, and hummingbirds do not eat the same foods, neither do our companion birds. In general, parrots can be classified according to their normal diets. Most psittacines (members of the parrot family) are florivores, meaning the main portion of their diet is obtained from plants. Among florivores, there are granivores (birds that eat grain and/or seeds, including nuts), and frugivores (birds with diets based on fruits). Some pet birds are omnivores, whose diet can consist of both plant and animal components. There is a special class of florivores called nectarivores, who eat mostly nectar.

What are the common mistakes when feeding birds?

Bird owners should be aware of these common mistakes when deciding what to feed your bird, how much and how often, remember just like any animal or human – birds need a balanced, well rounded diet to keep healthy.

  1. Watch Your Birds Food Bowl: Birds eat very carefully and wisely and often leave the hulls of seeds behind, consuming only the seed. In fact, they eat so carefully that the seed hulls can at times appear completely untouched. Learn how to recognize eaten seeds and empty hulls. To be on the safe side make sure you completely replace your bird’s food and water daily.
  2. Birds Pretending to Eat: Birds can be fussy eaters, they can also – just like us – choose to eat more “unhealthy” tasty foods than the healthy good things they need. Get to know your bird and recognize if your bird is actually eating - even if you see your bird nibble at something, it doesn't mean he or she understands that its actually food, your bird might just think it’s a new toy that tastes good. Make sure your bird actually knows its food and is swallowing.
  3. Beware of Toxic Foods & Household Goods: While most birds love the occasional fruit, and most fruit is in fact safe for birds; some fruit pits and seeds can contain small amounts of cardio-toxic cyanide. Apples and pears seed and pits from fruits like cherries, apricots, peaches and plums should be avoided. Simply core out the pits and seeds and let your bird enjoy the rest. The seeds found in other fruits, such as grapes, citrus fruits, squash, pumpkins, tomatoes, melons, mangoes, pomegranates and berries, all are safe for bird consumption. Avocado is one food you should never feed your bird; parts of this fruit are highly toxic. Never EVER feed a bird chocolate, it is extremely poisonous to birds. Birds also should not consume caffeine, alcohol or lead, and cigarette smoke is also bad for them! Watch out for poisonous houseplants too. And be mindful of Teflon coated cookware, under normal cooking conditions PTFE-coated cookware is stable and safe and only really can cause harm to your bird at really high temperatures, for example, if a Teflon coated pan is allowed to boil dry or an unfilled pan is heated on high, toxic fumes can result.
