JBL Sansibar RIVER is a light, fine substrate with black pebbles for freshwater and marine aquariums with an approximate grain size of 0.8 mm. Prevents injuries of the mucous membrane: coarse-grained, round-shaped natural sand is gentle on sensitive barbels. Ideal for digging fish, such as rays, kuhli loarch, catfish, etc. Ideal for fish, invertebrates and plants: no unwanted pollutants released into the water. Well suited for undergravel heater cables.

To Use: Rinse the substrate with tap water to remove any abrasion caused in transit. Put substrate on the nutrient substrate (JBL AquaBasis) to promote the plant growth (for vigorous growth about 6-8 cm).

JBL TerraSand Natural Red is a natural substrate ideal for desert terrariums. This natural substrate is made of fine red sand, with a grain size approximately 0.1 – 0.2 mm. Fine, virtually dust-free sand which, in moist condition, can be easily formed into caves etc., and keeps its shape after drying. Fine grain encourages the natural digging behaviour of many species while the round grain shape reduces abrasive effect on the animals skin.

To give the terrarium animals a home modelled on nature the terrarium needs to be modelled closely on the animals’ biotope. It is crucial that the size of the terrarium suits the animals’ requirements, amongst other factors. During the set-up it is important to have the right substrate, plants, air circulation, lighting and warmth in the terrarium. Which light for which animals?
Only a few pieces of common wisdom hold true. It is true that desert animals, which are active during the day, are exposed to strong UV radiation. For rainforest animals this is more complicated: As long as the animals stay under the leafy canopy of the rainforest they will have no or just very low UV radiation requirements. But whenever the animals live in the leafy canopy or at the riverbanks, their UV requirements can increase to that of desert animals! Therefore it is important that you deal with the habitat AND the habits of the animals.
An example: The tree python is a nocturnal animal and thus, at first glance, doesn’t rely on UV radiation. But it rests the whole day in the treetops and receives a lot of UV light. The decrease of UV radiation in the twilight is the start signal for its activity phase. Consequently this nocturnal animal also needs UV-emitting lighting!
